Fort assault route

Fort Capture: Plan the Ship Fight and the Landing Together
A fort is not finished when its walls fall. Prepare the Jackdaw for the naval approach, expect nearby ships to join the fight, then land with enough crew and tools to reduce the defenders' morale and reach the commander. Reopen the region map after claiming the fort: the new points of interest and Fleet missions are part of the payoff.
Route decision
Approach → land → claim → reveal
Pin the fort, check hull and ammunition at a Harbourmaster, identify an open-water retreat side, and read the region before the first shot.
The commander is defeated, the fort changes ownership, and the region's newly revealed points of interest or Fleet mission are visible in the save.
Sailing in with a weak hull or spending every mortar shot on the walls can leave the Jackdaw exposed to alerted ships before Edward can land.
Player workbench
Approach → land → claim → reveal
A fort has two combat phases and one map reward. Check each separately so a victory animation does not hide an unfinished region.
- RestockRepair hull and ammunition at a Harbourmaster; choose the Jackdaw weakness this fort will test.
- ApproachPin the fort, keep an open-water retreat side, and watch for ships attracted by the assault.
- LandOnce the naval phase ends, preserve on-foot tools for morale and the commander.
Decision table
Choose from the situation in front of you
| Situation | Decision | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Hull cannot survive the opening exchange | Leave and repair first | The land plan is irrelevant if the Jackdaw cannot reach the dock. |
| Fort fire is manageable but escorts converge | Clear a safe water lane | An alerted ship can deny the landing even when the walls are nearly down. |
| Walls fall but the fort is still hostile | Land and lower morale | The commander phase completes the capture; naval damage is only the first leg. |
| Fort is claimed but the region looks unchanged | Reopen the map and save state | The map reveal and Fleet access are separate proof of the region reward. |
Fort phase tracker
Resume at the phase that actually failed
A fort assault has separate sea, landing, commander, and region-reward proof. Record the last completed gate before deciding what to repeat.
-
At sea
Reach a safe landing
Track the first pressure on hull and ammunition, keep a retreat lane, and do not read wall damage as a completed capture.
Proof: The Jackdaw can reach the landing phase without an escort or hull failure ending the run.
-
On the fort
Finish morale and commander
After landing, use the active fort objective to lower defender morale and reach the commander instead of returning to the sea fight.
Proof: The current save shows the commander defeated and the fort's ownership changed.
-
After the claim
Check the regional payoff
Reopen the region map and inspect newly revealed points; then check whether the Fleet screen exposes the additional mission.
Proof: The expected map reveal or Fleet access is visible, not inferred from the victory animation.
Stop ruleIf the fort is still hostile, return to the last uncompleted gate. If ownership changed but the region did not reveal, verify the current update and map/save state before replaying the naval assault.
How to use it
Use a three-proof fort card
Record the fort name and region, the first pressure on the Jackdaw, then three proof marks: landed, commander defeated, and map reward visible. A failed attempt can resume from the exact phase that broke instead of triggering an unrelated ship-upgrade hunt.
Recovery path
If the region does not reveal
Confirm the commander and ownership state first, then reopen the map in the current save. The 1.0.7 note is specifically about a region not revealing after the fort was completed and synchronized to 100%, not a blanket fix for every missing marker. If that is your exact condition and the reward still does not appear, check the installed update and save state before repeating the naval assault.

Keep the route moving
The commander is defeated, the fort changes ownership, and the region's newly revealed points of interest or Fleet mission are visible in the save.
Common Questions
Does destroying the fort walls finish the capture?
No. Ubisoft describes a follow-up landing, morale fight, and commander defeat before the fort is yours.
Why did ships interrupt my fort approach?
Fort combat can alert nearby enemy ships. Clear or evade that water pressure before committing the Jackdaw to a landing angle.
What should change after a fort is captured?
Reopen the region map for newly revealed points of interest and check the Fleet menu for additional missions; confirm both in your current save.
