Jackdaw Officers: Recruit for the Pressure You Face

Choose an officer quest by the next fight's failure, not by collecting names. Lucy Baldwin's Perfect Brace helps a timing-based survival problem; the Padre supports boarding and unlocks Ram Dash; Tobias “Deadman” Smith adds an aimed broadside volley with little delay. Each joins after a world quest, and the perk remains unlocked once recruited.

Route decision

Pressure → officer quest → perk proof

Safe first move

Repeat one short naval opening, record whether survival, approach or boarding, or broadside damage fails first, then choose the corresponding officer quest.

Finish line

The selected officer's quest is complete, the perk appears in the current ship controls or crew state, and the same naval opening improves in the intended way.

Risk to avoid

A permanent perk is valuable, but pursuing all three quests before diagnosing the Jackdaw can delay the one upgrade or officer that actually solves the current encounter.

Perk proof card

Match the recruit to one repeatable fight window

An officer only answers the phase where the perk can act. Keep the target and base ship setup stable so the comparison tests the named benefit, not a different encounter.

  1. Lucy · survival

    Time one known Brace

Choose a repeatable incoming salvo, trigger Perfect Brace for that exchange, and avoid changing hull upgrades or approach at the same time.

Proof: The Brace timing is visible and the same salvo causes less incoming damage in the current save.

  2. Padre · approach / deck

    Separate contact from boarding

Record whether the Jackdaw fails before the target is reached or Edward's crew loses the deck phase; test Ram Dash only on the approach it can change.

Proof: The approach or boarding loss changes in its own phase rather than being credited to the wrong perk.

  3. Deadman · aimed damage

    Hold a broadside angle first

Use a target and range where the Jackdaw already keeps its aim; then compare the extra volley without changing gun upgrades.

Proof: The added volley lands during a stable aimed window; if the angle breaks first, the perk was not the limiting factor.

Stop ruleIf the encounter ends before the officer's perk could activate, stop the recruitment comparison and fix the earlier hull, positioning, or ammunition blocker first.

How to use it

Use the officer as one changed variable

Write the encounter, first failure, chosen officer, and proof of the perk. Keep ammunition, ship upgrades, and opening position stable for the comparison. The result is a useful quest priority, not a claim that one officer is best for every Jackdaw build.

Recovery path

If the perk seems absent

Check that the officer quest completed, then inspect the current crew, ability, or aiming state before repeating the entire route. The Padre's boarding help, Lucy's timing window, and Deadman's aimed volley show up in different phases; a perk can be unlocked yet not visible during the wrong action.

Common Questions

Which officer should I recruit first?

Choose Lucy for a Brace-timing survival blocker, the Padre for a ram or boarding blocker, or Deadman for damage at a stable aimed broadside. Fix base ship survival first if you cannot reach that phase.

Do officer perks expire after a mission?

Ubisoft says the perks are permanently unlocked after the officer joins. Confirm the quest and ability state in your current save.

Why does Deadman's extra volley not solve my fight?

It helps only after you can hold an aimed broadside window. If weather, escorts, or hull loss break the angle first, fix positioning or survival.
