Legendary Ships: Build the Attempt Before You Start the Fight
A legendary ship attempt should answer four questions before the first shot: can the Jackdaw survive the opening, can its damage reach the target, which secondary fire creates the safe window, and where does the attempt recover if the pattern breaks? Prepare those questions separately, then run the same opening before spending on another upgrade.
Route decision
Target → kit → opening
Choose one legendary encounter, repair and restock the Jackdaw, equip the intended secondary fire, and record the first exchange you are trying to survive.
The named encounter is defeated or the failed pressure is isolated well enough to choose one next upgrade and repeat the opening with evidence.
Trying all four encounters with a changing build turns a preparation problem into a vague difficulty problem and spends rare resources without a clean comparison.
Player workbench
Target → kit → opening
Use a target-specific preflight. The four encounters share a high-risk label but do not ask the Jackdaw to solve the same first pressure.
- ChooseName the legendary target and write its first pressure in one line.
- PrepareRepair, restock, select secondary fire, and check the relevant Jackdaw lane.
- RecordSave the point where survival, damage, control, or range first failed.
Decision table
Choose from the situation in front of you
| Situation | Decision | Why |
|---|---|---|
| First attempt ends before the pattern is readable | Protect survival | You need a stable opening before damage optimisation tells you anything. |
| Damage is consistent but the escape fails | Add control or range | The target is understood; the missing variable is space to reset the exchange. |
| A secondary fire creates a clean phase | Keep it fixed | Changing ammunition while learning the pattern hides the reason the phase worked. |
| The same pressure survives two controlled runs | Change one upgrade lane | A repeated failure is now specific enough to justify a build change. |
How to use it
Use a four-scene preflight
Before the fight, test one short open-water turn, one broadside distance, one mortar or secondary-fire window, and one escape turn. These small checks expose a bad control or damage lane before the full encounter consumes the attempt.
Recovery path
If the legendary ship wins
Keep the encounter, phase, and first failure in your notes. Return to Jackdaw Upgrades for one lane, then use Naval to repeat the same first exchange instead of starting a different legendary fight.

The named encounter is defeated or the failed pressure is isolated well enough to choose one next upgrade and repeat the opening with evidence.
Common Questions
Should I fight the four legendary ships in a fixed order?
Use the encounter that matches your current goal and ship readiness. The useful order is target-specific preparation, not a universal difficulty sequence.
What should I upgrade first?
Upgrade the pressure that ends the same opening twice. A hull problem, damage problem, and control problem require different lanes.
Are original Black Flag legendary ship tactics enough?
They are useful orientation. Retest secondary fires, officers, weather, and the current opening before treating the old tactic as final.
