Jackdaw Secondary Fire: Pick the Mode From the Position

Secondary fire is a position decision. Use Bow Chaser double shot when the target is leaving your bow, Heated Shot when a stable broadside can reward sustained pressure, Shrapnel Barrels when close pursuit needs an escape tool, and Deadman's Cohort when the fight is about controlling a dangerous area rather than one hull bar.

Route decision

Position → mode → exit

Safe first move

Before firing, identify the target's bearing, your exit side, and whether the next two seconds are for damage, control, or escape.

Finish line

The chosen mode changes the intended phase and the same position can be repeated without losing the Jackdaw to an unplanned follow-up.

Risk to avoid

Firing a mode because it has the highest apparent damage wastes its value when the Jackdaw is at the wrong angle or has no exit.

Position → mode → exit

Treat each secondary fire as a small route tool. The correct mode is the one that creates the next safe position, not the one with the biggest description.

  1. AlignKeep the target in the bow cone and mark the escape side before firing.
  2. FireUse Bow Chaser double shot only while the straight approach remains safe.
  3. ExitReturn to a broadside or open-water position instead of following into an escort.
Choose one route, then confirm each result in your save.

How to use it

Practise the mode at one distance

Pick one target and record the distance, bearing, and exit that made the mode useful. Repeating that small setup teaches the mode's job faster than cycling every ammunition type during a losing fight.

Recovery path

If the mode misses

Do not immediately upgrade damage. Mark the position, reload state, and escape side, then run the same approach with the mode chosen for control or survival before deciding whether the ship lane is wrong.

Common Questions

Which secondary fire is best overall?

There is no universal best mode. Choose by target bearing and the next safe position: bow chase, stable broadside, close control, or area pressure.

Why did Heated Shot feel weak?

It needs a stable broadside window. If the target or weather keeps breaking the angle, the problem is position rather than the mode's label.

Should I change modes during a legendary attempt?

Keep one mode while learning the opening. Change it only after the failure is clearly a position or control problem that the mode can address.
